Closer Weekly: ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Pro Kym Johnson to Open Fitness Studio in Richard Simmons’ Former Space
This is so cool!
“I wanted to have a fitness studio, and then I saw an article that Richard was closing [Slimmons] down, so I actually drove right down there,” the 40-year-old dancer told People on Monday, March 27.
“I just couldn’t bare the thought of that space being turned into an office with cubicles, so I spoke with the landlord and she felt the same way,” Kym continued. “She said, ‘I’m so glad that someone is taking it over that will keep it a fitness space because he did so much for so many people,’ and I’m hoping to continue that.”
“It is such a special space,” she continued. “When I go in there, it’s got this energy about it.”
Richard, 68, officially closed his famed fitness studio, Slimmons, in November 2016 after more than 40 years in business. Now, the exercise space is being renovated and is set to open as Kym’s new studio in a few weeks.
“I feel so bad taking [the Slimmons sign] down. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I feel like I may take it down and frame it somewhere. I’ve got to do something!” Kym said of honoring Richard.
Though Richard hasn’t commented on Kym taking over his studio, the DWTS pro hopes the fitness icon may one day visit her new space. “I haven’t heard from him but I heard that he’s just living his life and he’s happy,” she said. “I would love [for him] to come back and christen the space.”
